Based on The Ideal City, a 2021 book by SPACE10 and gestalten that sets out to reimagine a better way forward for our cities, this installation centres on three VR binoculars that give visitors a glimpse into different speculative cities — the Coastal City, the Garden City, and the Solar City.

By gazing through the binoculars, visitors could explore and experience how these three speculative cities had tackled the accelerating climate crisis, while creating a better life for the people who live there.

Each speculative city consisted of five different scenes with an audio narration describing the actions, solutions, and initiatives depicted in each scene. The result was a guided walk through of what a more desirable urban future could look like, and how we could get there together.

Ideal City 2040 was created specifically for the Barbican exhibition Our Time On Earth.
